This fall marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of Wittenburg Cathedral.  Throughout the world, churches are celebrating the 500th anniversary of what became known as the Protestant Reformation.  What was the Reformation? Did it really start with this event?  Who were the major players?  What was at stake? What were the differences in theology that led to what has been called “the scandal of the division of Christendom?”  What about the so-called Counter-Reformation?  Was there one Reformation or many reformations?   This fall, Fr. Dan will offer an extended course on the Reformation, its history and theology.  We will cover the causes of the Reformation, the theological controversies, the major figures, the birth of a variety of Christian denominations and church polities, and the varied traditions of liturgy, music, and private devotion.

There will be two time-slots to participate, Thursday mornings, 10:00 – 11:30, and Thursday evenings 7:00 – 8:30.  Participants are required to purchase the following text:

Reformation: Europe’s House Divided (also published as The Reformation: A History) by Diarmaid MaCulloch.  Cost $25.00.   Reading will be assigned each week from this text and we will also have the opportunity to read short passages from key Reformation figures (handed out).

Start date: Sept 14th

End date: Dec 21st (14 sessions)

Note: No session on October 19th
